Aadhaar Card Technology

The Aadhaar card employs the technology of smart card and follows the specifications of International standard for electronic identification cards (ISO/IEC 7816) and Smart Card Operating System Standard for Transport Application (SCOSTA).

A microprocessor of memory 16KB is embedded in the card which is mainly for security purposes and it enforces access to the data on the card. The card can retain its data for at least 10 years. In the official press release of Government of India, it was stated that the card uses ‘asymmetric key cryptography’ and ‘symmetric key cryptography’ which makes it secure against duplicating or tempering.
