Plan the first visit
For a child’s first Aadhaar, choose an authorised enrolment centre and check which documents apply to the child’s age and circumstances. Take the child and the relevant parent or legal guardian. Keep the child’s birth certificate and the parent or guardian’s Aadhaar ready, and check UIDAI’s current document list before travelling. Child-enrolment guidance
Prepare the intended spelling of the child’s full name. Compare it with the birth record and read it aloud while checking the form. Pay particular attention to the birth date and the local-language version of the name.
What happens for a child below five?
For children under five, enrolment captures the child’s photograph without fingerprint and iris capture. UIDAI requires biometric updates when the child reaches five and again at fifteen. These updates keep the same Aadhaar number. UIDAI child-biometric guidance
Add reminders to your family calendar for both ages. Keep the acknowledgement with other important family documents so it is easy to find later.
Make the visit easier
- Confirm that the selected centre handles the service your child needs.
- Carry originals, your appointment details if booked, and a working contact phone.
- Allow time for the child to settle before the photograph or biometric capture.
- Read every entered detail before the operator submits the request.
- Collect the originals and acknowledgement before leaving.
If your child already has Aadhaar, explain that you need an update rather than a second new enrolment. Use the existing number when discussing the request with the authorised centre.
Check charges for the actual age and service
New Aadhaar enrolment is free. For updates, check UIDAI’s current fee schedule and age-based rules. Temporary waivers have specific end dates; an old social-media message is not enough to establish the current charge. Official enrolment information
Keep your child’s Aadhaar, birth certificate and request receipts out of public posts. If a school asks for documentation, confirm the purpose and the preferred submission method.
