Decide exactly what needs to change
Write your current Aadhaar name and your intended name on two separate lines. Mark the difference: a spelling error, initials, surname, a missing word or a complete name change. This helps you explain the request clearly at an authorised centre.
Then compare the intended version with your supporting identity document. Do not decide on a new spelling while the operator is already filling the form.
Check the relevant evidence
Use UIDAI’s current supporting-document list and the name-update guidance. A small correction and a first-name or full-name change may require different evidence. For a first or full name change, UIDAI’s guidance refers to a Gazette notification and supporting proof of the earlier identity. UIDAI name-update guidance
If your situation involves marriage, adoption or a previous rejected request, describe it accurately when asking which evidence to bring. Avoid assuming that one document works for every type of change.
Be careful with the update limit
The standard name-update limit is twice in a lifetime. An exception process exists for qualifying cases; it is not automatic approval. UIDAI’s procedure also addresses certain operator and transliteration corrections. Name-update and exception procedure
If you think a previous mistake was made by an operator, keep the old acknowledgement and supporting records. Ask UIDAI how that particular correction should be handled instead of paying for repeated attempts.
At the centre
Take the original documents requested for your case. Check the English spelling, spacing, initials and local-language rendering before submission. Read the name slowly, one word at a time. Confirm that no title or unwanted abbreviation has been added.
Keep the acknowledgement and track the result. Once approved, download the updated e-Aadhaar and compare the name again.
Plan the next steps
Make a separate list of places where your name appears: school, employer, bank or another identity record. An Aadhaar correction does not mean you have finished reviewing those records. Contact each organisation through its own official process when a change is needed.
