What the mask actually hides
Masked Aadhaar replaces the first eight digits of the Aadhaar number and leaves the last four visible. UIDAI offers it as an e-Aadhaar download option. It helps you avoid handing over the full number when that number is unnecessary. UIDAI’s explanation
Think of masking as a limit on what you share. The document is still personal: your name, photograph, address and other visible details can identify you. A masked copy should not be posted publicly.
Before sending a copy
Ask the recipient three simple questions:
- What information do you need to verify?
- Can you accept a masked Aadhaar or another suitable document?
- How should I send it, and how will the copy be handled?
A specific service may have its own verification requirements. Check those requirements before an appointment or deadline so that you do not arrive with a document the recipient cannot process.
Download a masked version
Open myAadhaar, choose the Aadhaar download service, and look for the masked-copy option during the official flow. Complete the verification yourself. Save and open the resulting PDF before you share it.
Check that you selected the intended file. A phone may keep several similarly named downloads, including an older unmasked version. Rename your private copy clearly so the two are easy to distinguish. Avoid placing your full Aadhaar number in the filename.
Keep the whole document in mind
Do not assume that hiding the printed number makes the file anonymous. Be careful with screenshots, QR codes, email attachments and shared folders. If you need help with a website error, crop or obscure personal information before showing the error message to someone else.
Use the official masked download rather than uploading your original Aadhaar to an unfamiliar masking tool. For a routine PDF-opening problem, our download guide explains the password format without asking you for your identity details.
UIDAI advises against displaying Aadhaar publicly on social media. Apply the same care to a masked copy because it still contains personal information. UIDAI privacy guidance
